Mesum Verma has accomplished his bucket list of exploring the Zanskar region in Ladakh on his mountain bike.
“For me, a Bucket List means to do something that requires efforts, it shouldn’t be something ordinary, and difficulties are a prerequisite.“
It’s not that the bucket lister doesn’t want others to have a similar bucket list and try it but he believes in the uniqueness of how one does it.
The same ideology wanted him to do something, not many people have done before. The bucket lister recalls of snowboarding on fresh snow, back in the days. It was a special feeling for him to ride down a mountain, look back, and see the single one line trail he had left behind.
I have travelled to a lot of exotic countries, and it was always something of a mandate for me to ride my snowboard there. Later on in my life, I just shifted to mountain biking. It was one of those days when I was in Ladakh, trekking. That is when and where the urge to trek across the region on my mountain bike made its way on my bucket list.
Drawing up a plan
Mesum had to check on the possibility of riding a mountain bike on the trails over the Zanskar region, Ladakh. Almost a year later, the bucket lister visited the region, rented a bike and started inquiring people of the same.
“I chose the Kings Trek. I don’t know, what it is called now, but back in the days the trek from Darshu to Lamayuru was the ultimate trek in the region.
The mountain biker gathered as much information as possible to prepare himself for the bucket list ride in hand. However, it wasn’t easy, as it sounds. No accurate info was available at hand for nobody had done it before.
The trekking agencies backed out on his ‘impossible’ plan and so did the trekking guides, who discouraged him from riding his mountain bike on the terrain.
Fortunately for Mesum, he found a trek guide who wanted to accompany him on his trek over the Zanskar region, Ladakh and try it for himself. A year later they did it with two riders from Switzerland and local guides – a whole team of 6 people and 10 horses.
“It is good to have a Bucket List.” – Mesum
Mesum acknowledges that a bucket list is like a driving force that can lead someone to conquer the greatest of pinnacles. His bucket list has been driving him to do more. And there is never enough. He is always looking out for new things to do.
The bucket lister realizes that it’s good that he has a bucket list, that keeps him going to accomplish it.
Even it takes a lot from me. There are even things that can’t be done, quickly. But once I accomplish a bucket list, it helps me stay focused on the next item on my list.
Potholes and Punctures
Mesum accepts that he had faced his own share of difficulties on his mountain-biking trip. He believes that there will always be difficulties, but one shouldn’t let it fool themselves.
Mountain biking on such a terrain is basically riding in the middle of nowhere and fast. There are no proper routes/roads one can steadily follow, no modern food outlets or lavatories, the weather is unpredictable, temperatures go beyond numbness. But once you’ve made it to your bucket list spot, it seems so simple.
Money is an issue in this case too, because crazier the bucket list, the more expensive it gets at a time. So, it is always an act of balance as to how much money one shall put in their journey towards accomplishing their bucket list. Difficulties help you understand and experience things that no amount of money can buy.
“It depends on how hard you want to accomplish your goal, your bucket list.”
Words of wisdom
For those looking forward to their bucket lists the bucket lister mountain biker has some serious advice.
“Start, and never look back. You’ll have many telling you that it’s impossible. And don’t let yourself down if you fail sometimes, it just makes stronger. And we learn only after we fail. Eventually, you’ll end up with better ways of how not to fail.“
For his next bucket list, Mesum wants to ride in all of the Asian countries, to places where people don’t usually go for mountain biking. He also wants to promote the benefits of mountain biking and the aesthetics of such an adventure sport through his magazine.
