Kaushik Mukherjee and Vineeta Singh are a fitness freak couple from India, who had a bucket list item of participating in a Triathlon. They met during their MBA studies at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and got married in 2011. The couple who runs a five-year-old startup now has created history by becoming the first Indian couple to finish the Ironman Triathlon together, on July 2nd 2017.
Ironman Triathlon is considered as one of the most difficult single-day sports event in the world, conducted by the World Triathlon Corporation. It starts with 3.8kms swim, 180kms bicycle ride and 42kms run which has to be completed in 17 hours.
Kaushik had been a swimmer and Vineeta a runner during their university days. Two years before, they thought of doing something together as a couple and so, decided to participate in a sporting event which combines both running and swimming. It was at that time, they happened to know about Ironman Triathlon. And as they researched further, they came to know that no Indian couple has completed it till date.
From that day, the bucket list of Kaushik and Vineeta was to become the first Indian couple to finish the Ironman Triathlon. As they were very vigilant about fitness and wanted to test themselves, they decided to train swimming and running along with cycling to participate in the event.
Since they had to travel a lot as part of their startup and as they themselves are parents to a two-year-old boy, the idea of training together was out of the picture. While Vineeta trained in the early morning, Kaushik trained in the evening. They even attended events at Delhi, Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, and Chennai to train and prepare for the Ironman competition.
After a training period of six months which contained tight planning, strict diet, and lengthy regular practice they set off to Austria to participate in the event. Vineeta completed the 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run in 16hrs 01min. Kaushik came in a little later at 16hrs 29mins. They said that the feeling was surreal when they touched the finishing line.
The couple is looking forward to participating and complete the Ironman Triathlon once again in the future.
“When you finish, it changes you completely and makes you forget your struggles and self-doubt.”
